News From Amazon.com: Amazon to Sell OLPC XO Laptops From November

Amazon.com will start selling One Laptop Per Child's low-cost XO notebook computer as part of the Give One, Get One program OLPC developed last year, according to an official from OLPC.

The non-profit organization started Give One, Get One as a way to raise money to send laptops to school kids in poor countries. The idea is that a person pays for two of the XO laptops developed by OLPC. One is sent to the buyer, and another is donated to a child in a developing country.

This year, OLPC opted to team up with a Web e-tailer instead of running the program itself, said Matt Keller, director of Europe, Middle East and Africa at OLPC, in an interview Wednesday.

Amazon.com will start selling XO laptops under the Give One, Get One program in late November, around the time of Thanksgiving in the U.S. Sales will likely extend through to around the end of December.

"We're a small group of people," said Keller, explaining the rationale for working with Amazon.com.

OLPC is run by a small group of people, he said. There are a few thousand volunteers that help out with software development and other projects, but the core group itself is just 25 people.

Next In Future: Next-Gen XO Laptop Due in 2010

The second-generation XO laptop from the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project, which features two touchscreens and was announced in May, will become available in the first quarter of 2010.

That's the prediction from Matt Keller, OLPC's director of Europe, Middle East and Africa, who said the group has high hopes for the XO-2's e-book capabilities, which he believes will make reading easier for schoolchildren in emerging economies.

"The e-book reader is the most popular function of the laptop," said Keller.

The laptop is nearly half the size of current XO laptop and consists of two touchscreen displays. The XO-2 doesn't include a keyboard, but instead will feature a software-based touch-sensitive keyboard.

The XO currently costs around $204 (£102) to make, said Keller, while the XO-2 will likely cost around $80 (£40). OLPC's still hopes to reach a price of $75 per laptop for educational buyers.

Lotus iNotes Aims for iPhone 3G

IBM's Lotus Domino Web Access software, also known as IBM Lotus iNotes, will bring your Lotus e-mail, calendar and contact details to the Apple iPhone 3G.

IBM says the Lotus functionality is planned for delivery to the iPhone sometime in 2008, although no official announcement has yet been made and the company is stating that Lotus iNotes on the iPhone represents "current IBM plans and directions, which are subject to change."

The Web page touting Lotus functionality on the iPhone states that Lotus Notes data "will combine with the flexibility and connectivity of the Apple iPhone. To be built on the time tested IBM Lotus Domino Web Access infrastructure, users will be able to quickly access e-mail, calendars, and contacts through the rich Apple iPhone user experience."

The new iPhone 3G has earned praise as an enterprise mobile device and platform that holds its own against the likes of the Nokia E-Series, RIM BlackBerry, and Windows Mobile 6 devices.

But not everyone is convinced, with the new iPhone 2.0 software drawing criticism for being less competent and less tested than its BlackBerry and Windows Mobile counterparts.

Global analyst firm Gartner, after three weeks of testing and reviewing Apple's new iPhone 2.0 firmware and the iPhone 3G for use in large businesses, said the device can be supported by IT shops -- but only for a narrow set of uses such as voice, e-mail, Web browsing and the storage of personal information, citing security concerns as the reason for its restriction to limited use cases.

Nevertheless vendors including Oracle, NetSuite and others have or are releasing enterprise business intelligence applications for the iPhone 3G.

According to IBM's Web site, access to Lotus iNotes e-mail, calendars and contacts on the new iPhone will include the following features:

-- Easy viewing of Lotus inbox

-- Read e-mail with details either hidden or shown

-- The ability to quickly compose or reply to e-mail

-- The ability to attach and send files

-- View day-at-a-glance calendar

-- View details on meetings, all day events, reminders, and anniversaries

-- View an organized view of your contacts

-- View information on contacts and groups, and

-- Quickly create new contact entries

Microsoft Repositions Money

Microsoft won't update its Money Plus personal finance software, as it has annually for 17 years, and has pulled the program from retail, saying it will now distribute it only electronically, according to postings on the company's support forum.

"The feedback we are hearing is that the incremental updates to the software don't merit a new product every year," the company said in a message added to the Money forum by Bob Peel, a Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional) at the request of Microsoft. "Given this, we have decided against releasing a 2009 version of Money Plus."

The current version, Money Plus 2008, will also soon vanish from store shelves, as Microsoft has decided to stop selling boxed copies of the program.

"In response to our retail partners' needs, consumer behavior and business efficiencies, Microsoft is focusing distribution efforts for Microsoft Money Plus software online via download and discontinuing traditional box sales of the software at retail," the message posted by Peel continued.

"Microsoft Money Plus will continue to be available at retail outlets while supplies last. We have stopped shipping new product to retail outlets," the company said.

Microsoft has struggled for years to compete with Intuit Inc. and its Quicken product, which owns the lion's share of the market.

In the message, Microsoft did not say when it would next update Money Plus, or what its update schedule going forward would look like. Nor did it explicitly promise that a new version would eventually be released, saying that "future release dates [to be determined]."

Microsoft did not immediately reply to requests for additional comment.

News - Nikon Unleashed New Digital Camera

Nikon today announced its fall lineup of cameras, including a refresh of its Wi-Fi model. Due out in September, the new cameras are all 10 megapixels or greater, and most models are available in multiple colors.

A few models in particular have caught my attention--starting with the 10-megapixel, $350 Coolpix S60, which has a generous 3.5-inch multitouch LCD occupying the entire back surface of the camera. Just as with Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch, you can review your pictures with a swipe of the finger; you can also use an editing mode to write overlays onto pictures. This model, available in six different colors, also features Nikon's new scene auto selector mode, which adjusts the exposure of the image by choosing from the most popular six auto scenes; the camera's matrix metering system helps to determines which mode is appropriate based on the image's available light.

Also of note: the new Coolpix S610c, the wireless upgrade to the S52c. For $50 less than its predecessor, the $330 model bumps resolution to 10 megapixels, and includes free wireless access via any Wayport access point. (Wayport replaces previous Wi-Fi partner T-Mobile.) The Wayport deal is notable, not just because of Wayport's penetration at hotels, airports, and McDonald's locations; Nikon's deal with Wayport provides camera owners with free access via the camera through August 2011.

Finally, the Coolpix S710 is noteworthy for two reasons. Its sensor packs a whopping 14.5 megapixels--which will be helpful if you plan to crop into your images. And, it boasts ISO speeds of up to 12,800--a uniquely high ISO. In the demo I saw, the images shot at such high ISO speeds didn't show the noise and softness I'd have expected. Nikon says you can expect comparatively low noise, even at high ISOs, because this model's handling of high ISO speeds has been informed by the company's work in this area in its high-end digital SLRs, the Nikon D3 and the Nikon D300.

Top China Web Sites Join to Fight Olympic Piracy - do you want to know it?

China's top 10 Web sites are following a government order to work together to fight piracy of Olympic material, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Tuesday.

Sina, Netease, official Olympic Web site Sohu and six other sites signed an agreement with China Central Television (CCTV), which is the games' official Internet broadcaster in China, stating they will not provide video, images or content that would violate CCTV's rights, nor will they provide links to such material.

The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, China's Internet and broadcast content regulator, has ordered all Web sites to respect CCTV's broadcast rights, online and offline.

CCTV, also China's top broadcaster and domestic licensee for the 2008 Olympics, has partnerships to provide online and mobile content to 160 Web sites, in China and the Macau Special Administrative Region, west of Hong Kong.

The move may have come in part because of the filming and broadcast of rehearsals of the opening ceremonies by a Korean news team from Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS), a move that incensed the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG).

The 2008 Olympics begin Friday night in Beijing, and run through August 24.

News - IBM Challenges Microsoft for the SMB Desktop

For most small to midsized businesses, software means Microsoft. For almost any category of business software -- from word processing to spreadsheets, presentations to communication and collaboration -- Microsoft is the de facto vendor of choice. Alternatives do exist, but who wants to be the first one to rock the boat? Microsoft has grown so cocky about its position that it even bragged that it would soon steal five million users away from IBM's Lotus Notus, a competitor to its own Outlook and Exchange.

That's not the kind of threat that IBM takes lying down. On the contrary; it's digging in. Big Blue claims that it is redoubling its efforts to win customers away from Microsoft, beginning with a big win in Asia and new partnerships with major Linux vendors.

First, says IBM, just because Microsoft enjoys seemingly unshakeable dominance of the U.S. business software market doesn't mean that has to be the case everywhere. Big Blue sees a big opportunity for its own software in Asia and other emerging markets, and it's backing up that speculation with real numbers. Just last week it announced a single deal with an as-yet-unnamed Asian company that it says will add 300,000 new seats to its Lotus Notes business.

One major selling point of Notes over Outlook is that while every PC that runs Outlook must also purchase a Windows license, Notes also runs on Linux. Per-seat licensing for commercial Linux distributions is typically lower than that of Windows, and community-maintained Linux distributions can be downloaded and installed for free. IBM is hoping that the low total cost of a PC running Notes on Linux will make such systems attractive to cost-conscious customers in emerging markets.

To further up the ante, IBM announced on Tuesday that it has forged partnerships with major hardware and Linux vendors to ensure that installing IBM business software on Linux systems is as painless as possible. Soon, Linux users will be able to obtain versions of IBM's Lotus Foundations software that have been specially packaged for installation on Novell Suse, Red Hat, or Ubuntu Linux.

Lotus Foundations is a software bundle that includes not just Notes, but also the Sametime enterprise instant messaging system and Symphony, IBM's competitor to the Microsoft Office productivity suite. By prepackaging it for the top three desktop Linux distributions, IBM stands to make Foundations a one-click install for the majority of business Linux customers.

This is certainly encouraging news for anyone who is seeking an alternative to the Microsoft-dominated business software market, particularly in emerging markets such as Asia. Whether any of this momentum will translate into increased sales for IBM's software over Microsoft's in the U.S., however, remains to be seen.

What do you think? Are you itching to break Microsoft's grip on your business? Will easier access to IBM's alternative software make you more likely to switch to the Lotus platform, or are you more interested in Web-based software such as Google Apps? Or, on the other hand, do you feel that there simply isn't any genuine competition for Microsoft's business software? Sound off in the PC World Community Forums.

Google to Launch Free Music Service in China - hot

Google is launching a music service aimed at providing Chinese listeners with free, legal music downloads, it said Tuesday.

Users can search for musicians they like from Google China's main page. Popular artists will be represented by a dedicated listing in the search results. If the artist or artist's record company are part of Google's licensing agreement with Chinese music site Top100.cn, then searchers they may download a selection of songs for free. If not, then they will be able to hear a sample of the artist's work, or view song lyrics.

The user does not need to download new software to listen to the songs, Google said, referring to the service as an "experiment."

Attempts at building legal music download services have met with varying success. Motorola's Chinese paid-for music service, motomusic.com.cn, has sold over 2.5 million songs and ringtones, the company said Wednesday. However, digital music heavyweight Apple has yet to open a Chinese store.

Forty-six percent of total legal music sales in China are digital, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), but over 99 percent of all music files distributed here are not legal, the group said.

News - Casio Launches Thin Exilim Digital Camera

Casio has expanded its Exilim digital still camera range with a slim 8-megapixel model.

The Exilim Zoom EX-Z150 packs a wide-angle 28mm lens with 4X optical zoom so users should be able to get more into a picture than with many other digital cameras.

The camera is 2 cm thick, 9.7cm wide by 5.7cm tall and is the thinnest camera in its class, according to Casio.

Other features include anti-shake, face detection and a 3-inch LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor on the rear. It also has a YouTube shooting mode that records video in a file format and resolution preferred by YouTube, so the videos won't be re-encoded by the site and should maintain their quality.

Another handy feature is the date edit function, that allows you to go back and change the date and time on which a photo was recorded when it is taken. This means users can, for example, go back and correct pictures if they forget to change the camera settings when they arrived in a new time zone.

The camera will go on sale in Europe from August and cost around €200 (US$318). It will hit the U.S. market in September and carry a US$199 price tag.

Final Fantasy XIII Demo Coming in March in Japan - Hot

Japanese game publisher Square Enix updated fans on several of its new titles at an event in Tokyo over the weekend. The roughly 1,500 fans who got to attend the closed-door "DKΣ3713" got a chance to see the latest trailers for a host of hot-games including three in the "Final Fantasy XIII" series and news of a playable demo for the game.

Among the biggest news from the event is that a playable demo of "Final Fantasy XIII" will be included in the Blu-ray Disc package for the "Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete" animation title. Square Enix will put the high-def version of the movie on sale in March next year packaged with the demo. The box will also include trailers for "Final Fantasy Versus XIII" and "Final Fantasy Agito XIII," making it a must-have for Final Fantasy fans.

This is likely the biggest piece of news for gamers outside of Japan as the country shares a Blu-ray Disc video region code with the U.S. and games are typically not region-locked. So, Ebay entrepreneurs start your engines -- this will be a hot item on the import market.

As for the game itself, "Final Fantasy XIII" is coming in 2009 in Japan, Square Enix said. As the event is Japan-focused it refrained from making any comment on other markets.

Square Enix made headlines at the recent E3 show in Los Angeles with news that "Final Fantasy XIII" will also be coming to the Xbox 360 platform. While any details concerning the Xbox 360 version of the game were not announced -- the console is in a trailing third place in Japan -- the company did seek to reassure fans that the game will be developed first-and-foremost for the PlayStation 3 platform so it will benefit from the console's full high-def gaming.

Only after the PlayStation 3 version is completed will the team work on the Xbox 360 version.

In addition to a spectacular trailer for the game a home movie-style video filmed by developed Tetsuya Nomura was also shown. In the video he talked and joked with four members of the FFXIII development team about their work on the game. Among the snippets to come out of the video was news that Square Enix will reveal some of the voice actors at October's Tokyo Game Show and that character development is due to be completed at around the same time. That would appear to rule out a playable demo of the game at TGS.

A part of the world in which the game takes place was also shown and it's huge. There was some discussion among the developers about just how much of the world to include on the playable demo and Nomura expressed a worry that gamers might easily get lost inside the world due to its size.

In other news, "Final Fantasy Agito XIII" will be appearing on the PlayStation Portable in addition to the PlayStation 3 and the trailer of "Final Fantasy Versus XIII" ended with the line "PlayStation 3 only worldwide."
